Why 160 characters is the whole design constraint
An SMS is billed per 160 characters, so a message of 170 costs twice as much to send to the same list. On a list of two thousand that is the difference between one bill and two, for one word.
The generator counts characters for you and includes the business name in the count, because recipients need to know who is texting them and the name is part of the message rather than free.
