What the description field is actually for

Google Business Profile gives you 750 characters to say what the business does and where. It is not a ranking lever on its own, but it is what a person reads when they are choosing between you and the shop two streets away, and it is often the only prose about your business they will see.

The first line matters most, because it is what shows before the "more" link. Say what you do and where you do it there.

Write for the person, not the keyword

Listing every service as a comma-separated string reads as spam to a human and does nothing for a machine. Work the main services and the area into sentences that someone would actually say.

Leave out claims you cannot support. "The leading supplier in Nairobi" is unverifiable and makes the rest less believable; "open on Sundays, with same-day delivery in Kilimani" is specific and checkable.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a Google Business Profile description be?
750 characters. The generator stays within that, and puts what the business does and where in the first line, since that is what shows before a reader taps "more".
Does the description affect local rankings?
Not much on its own. Google weighs proximity, relevance and prominence, and the description is a small part of relevance at most. It matters more as the prose a potential customer reads while choosing between you and a competitor.
Should I list all my services in it?
No. A comma-separated list of services reads as spam to a person and does nothing for a machine. Name the main ones in sentences, and use the Services section of the profile for the full list, which is what it is for.
Can I say I am the best in my area?
You can, and it is worth not doing. It is unverifiable, every competitor says it, and it makes the specific claims around it less believable. "Open on Sundays with same-day delivery in Kilimani" does more work.
How often should I update it?
When something changes that a customer would care about: a new service, a new area served, different hours. Rewriting it for its own sake is not a ranking signal and is not worth the time.
