A tagline is a reminder, not an argument

It sits under the name on a sign, a receipt, a WhatsApp profile. Its job is to say what the business is for in a few words, to someone who is already looking at the name.

Short wins. Under eight words is a rough ceiling, because a tagline is read in passing rather than studied.

The test that kills most of them

Put a competitor’s name in front of it. If it still works, the tagline is not about your business: "Excellence in service" and "Your trusted partner" fit every business in the country, which is the same as fitting none.

Swahili or a mix often carries more warmth than English alone for a local customer base, and it is worth generating a few either way to hear the difference.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good business tagline?
It says what the business is for in a few words and would not fit a competitor. If you can swap another business name in front of it and it still works, it is not a tagline, it is decoration.
How long should a tagline be?
Under about eight words. It is read in passing, on a sign or a receipt, next to the name. Anything longer gets skipped.
Should my tagline be in Swahili or English?
Whichever your customers speak, and a mix is often warmer than either alone for a local customer base. The generator produces some of each so you can hear the difference rather than decide in the abstract.
Can I trademark a tagline in Kenya?
Taglines can in principle be registered as trade marks through KIPI, subject to the usual requirements about distinctiveness. A generic phrase is unlikely to qualify, which is another reason to avoid one. Take advice before relying on it.
Why does the tool avoid words like "solutions" and "excellence"?
Because they are the words every business reaches for, which makes them the words that distinguish none of them. A tagline built from them tells a customer nothing they did not already assume.
