Write the story, not the announcement

A journalist receives a great many releases and discards the ones that read as advertising within a line. The ones that get used read like the article the journalist would otherwise have to write: what happened, who it affects, why now.

"We are excited to announce" is the clearest signal that what follows is promotion. So is any superlative, and so is a claim to be the first or the leading anything.

The quote is the part that gets printed

A quote should say something a person would actually say, with an opinion or a reason in it. "We are committed to excellence" is never printed. "Farmers here were driving forty kilometres for certified seed" is.

Attribute it to a named person with a title, and make sure they have agreed to it, because a release is a published statement from your business.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a press release get picked up?
News value and a story a journalist can use with little work: what happened, who it affects, why now, and a usable quote. Anything that reads as advertising is discarded, usually within the first line.
How long should a press release be?
About 300 words, on one page. The first paragraph should carry who, what, where and when on its own, because that is often all that gets read before a decision is made.
What should the quote say?
Something a person would actually say, with a reason or an opinion in it. "We are committed to excellence" is never printed; a sentence explaining why the thing happened usually is. Attribute it to a named person who has agreed to it.
Why does the draft avoid words like "excited" and "leading"?
Because they mark the text as promotion rather than news, and a journalist filters on exactly that. They also tend to be the sentences with no information in them.
Where do I send it?
To named journalists who cover your sector or your county, individually, rather than to a general newsroom address. A release that matters locally often does better with one local reporter than with a national distribution list.
