When and how M-Pesa reversals work
An M-Pesa reversal returns money sent in error, for example to the wrong number or the wrong amount. Safaricom can recall the funds if they are still in the recipient's account; if the recipient has already withdrawn or spent the money, recovery depends on their cooperation and is harder.
Speed matters. The sooner you initiate a reversal after the mistake, the better the chance the funds are still recoverable. That is why knowing the quick methods, *456#, forwarding the SMS to 456, or calling care, before you need them is useful.
For a business, the more common issue is a customer disputing or a wrong amount at the till. Good records and a system that captures each payment against a sale reduce disputes and make any genuine reversal straightforward to evidence.
How to reverse an M-Pesa transaction, step by step
Use any of these methods, the sooner the better.
- 1
Method 1: Dial *456#
Dial *456#, navigate to the reversal option (Reverse Transaction), select the wrong transaction, and confirm. Follow the prompts to request the reversal.
- 2
Method 2: Forward the SMS to 456
Forward the M-Pesa confirmation message for the wrong transaction to 456. This flags the transaction to Safaricom for reversal.
- 3
Method 3: Call Safaricom care
Call customer care on 100 (prepaid) or 200 (postpaid), explain the error, and provide the transaction details so they can process the reversal.
- 4
Step 4: Provide accurate details
Have the transaction code, amount, time and the wrong recipient number ready. Accurate details speed up the process.
- 5
Step 5: Act quickly
Initiate the reversal as soon as you notice the error, before the recipient withdraws the funds, to maximise the chance of recovery.
- 6
Step 6: Keep the confirmation
Note the reference for your reversal request and keep the original transaction SMS as evidence until it is resolved.
M-Pesa reversal mistakes
Waiting too long
The longer you wait, the more likely the recipient withdraws the funds and recovery becomes hard. Start the reversal immediately.
Wrong or missing transaction details
Reversals need the correct transaction code, amount and recipient. Vague details delay or block the request.
Assuming reversal is guaranteed
If the money has already been spent, a reversal may not succeed without the recipient's cooperation. It is not guaranteed.
No record of the payment
For businesses, disputing a payment without a clear record is hard. Keep each payment tied to a sale.
Falling for reversal scams
Never act on fake reversal messages asking you to send money back. Verify in your own M-Pesa balance, and only use official Safaricom channels.
A trader recovers a wrong payment
A trader in Nairobi accidentally sent a supplier payment to the wrong number, one digit off. He noticed within minutes.
He immediately forwarded the confirmation SMS to 456 and dialled *456# to request a reversal, with the transaction code ready. Because the recipient had not withdrawn the money, Safaricom recovered it.
Acting fast made the difference. He also moved his business payments onto software that recorded each payment against a supplier and sale, reducing the chance of a wrong send in future.
When M-Pesa payments are not matched to sales, a missing payment, a staff shortfall or a double charge can slip past you until the money is already gone.
Veira reconciles M-Pesa Till and Paybill against every sale, so a mismatch surfaces the same day instead of at month end.
How Veira reduces wrong payments and disputes
Veira records each M-Pesa payment against a specific sale and customer, so amounts are captured correctly and disputes are easy to evidence. Fewer manual entries means fewer wrong amounts and less need for reversals.
And when a genuine correction is needed, having a clean record of every payment and sale makes resolving it fast, from KES 2,999 a month.
