How do I join a Sacco in Kenya?

Updated September 2026

Short answer

Find a Sacco whose common bond you fall inside, since every Sacco defines in its registered bylaws who may join, then pay the one-off registration amount and your share capital and start making the regular monthly deposit. Membership is an ownership position rather than an account: the share capital makes you an owner with a vote, and the deposits are the separate balance your future borrowing is measured against.

More detail

The common bond is the first question and it is binary. Some Saccos are tied to an employer or sector, some to a profession, some to a county or community, and many have opened additional membership classes. Counter staff cannot waive it, because it is a registered rule rather than a policy.

Before paying anything, get five things in writing with a date on them: the share capital required, the minimum monthly deposit, the qualifying period before you can borrow, the loan multiplier for the product you are likely to want, and the exit terms. All five are set by the individual Sacco and revised, and the exit terms are the ones members most regret not asking about.

Related questions

Can anyone join a Sacco?
Only within the Sacco’s common bond, which is set out in its registered bylaws. Many Kenyan Saccos have widened membership over time, sometimes through a separate class with its own terms, so ask the specific society rather than assuming either way.
How much does it cost to join a Sacco?
A one-off registration amount plus share capital, then an ongoing monthly deposit. All three are set by each Sacco and revised, so confirm the current figures with the Sacco directly.
Can I join a Sacco if I am self-employed?
Many Saccos admit self-employed members, through an open membership class or a bond based on trade, county or community rather than employment. Deposits are then paid directly rather than by salary check-off.
