How do I check my Sacco balance?

Updated September 2026

Short answer

Through whichever channels your own Sacco offers, commonly a member portal or app, a USSD code, SMS, or a statement from the office. What matters more than the channel is reading the result correctly: a Sacco statement shows several separate balances, not one, and they are available to you on completely different terms.

More detail

Expect at least three lines. Share capital is your ownership stake and is generally not withdrawable while you remain a member. Deposits are your accumulated contributions, which determine how much you can borrow and are not designed to be moved in and out. A front-office savings balance, which only exists where the Sacco is licensed to take withdrawable deposits, is the only one that behaves like an ordinary account.

Adding the three together and thinking of the total as your savings is the most common misreading of a Sacco statement, and it is usually the smallest line that is actually spendable. If you have guaranteed another member, part of your deposits may also be committed even though nothing on the statement is obviously flagged, so ask.

Related questions

Why does my Sacco statement show several balances?
Because share capital, member deposits and any front-office savings are different things with different rules. Share capital is ownership and is generally locked; deposits build borrowing capacity; only a licensed front-office account holds money designed to be withdrawn.
Can I check my Sacco balance by SMS or USSD?
Many Kenyan Saccos offer SMS, USSD or an app, but the channels differ by society and some operate office-only. Ask your Sacco what it provides rather than assuming a code you saw elsewhere will work.
Why is my available balance lower than my deposits?
Deposits secure your own borrowing and any loan you have guaranteed for another member. A live guarantee can hold part of your deposits even when you have no loan of your own.
