Can I withdraw my Sacco savings?

Updated September 2026

Short answer

It depends which balance and which Sacco. A front-office savings account, which only Saccos licensed to take withdrawable deposits can operate, works like an ordinary account. Back-office deposits do not: they underpin your borrowing capacity, and accessing them usually means reducing or ending your membership position, subject to notice and to any loan or guarantee they secure.

More detail

This is the single most common surprise members report, and it is structural rather than an obstruction. Deposits are the money the Sacco lends to other members, so they cannot also be a current account. The model only works because that balance stays put.

If you need money you can reach during the month, establish before joining whether the Sacco is licensed to hold it, on the regulator’s published list rather than on the Sacco’s own description. If you are already a member and need to exit, ask for the notice period, how deposits are released, what happens to share capital, and how any outstanding loan or live guarantee is settled. Those are four separate answers.

Related questions

How long does it take to get Sacco savings back?
Notice periods and release timelines are set by each Sacco in its bylaws and differ widely. Ask for the specific process in writing, ideally before joining rather than at the point of needing the money.
Can a Sacco refuse to release my deposits?
Deposits secure your own borrowing and any guarantee you have given, so they can legitimately be held while either is live. Beyond that, the release process is governed by the bylaws and by co-operative law, and the bylaws also set out the dispute procedure.
Is share capital refundable when I leave?
Share capital is an ownership stake rather than a savings balance, and its treatment on exit is set out in the bylaws. It is one of the four questions worth answering before joining.
