How annual leave works in Kenya

Statutory minimum is 21 working days per year for adults, accrued at 1.75 working days per completed month of service.

Employees must take leave during the leave year or by agreement carry forward (a maximum of 18 months is typical practice).

Frequently asked questions

Is annual leave paid?
Yes. Annual leave is fully paid at the normal rate.
Are public holidays counted?
Public holidays that fall during annual leave are not counted against leave days.
Can leave be encashed?
Yes, on termination, any unused leave must be paid out.
What about maternity / paternity leave?
Maternity is 3 months fully paid; paternity is 2 weeks. Both are in addition to annual leave.
