How import costs work at Kenyan ports

When goods arrive in Mombasa or Nairobi, KRA assesses import duty under the EAC Common External Tariff. Three small levies (IDF, RDL and import declaration) are added, then 16% VAT is calculated on the cumulative taxable base.

Excise duty applies to a separate list of products (alcohol, fuels, tobacco, sugar drinks, etc.) and would stack on top of these.

Frequently asked questions

What is CIF?
Cost + Insurance + Freight: the value of the goods plus the cost of shipping and insurance to the Kenyan port.
