What is SHIF (Social Health Insurance Fund)?

SHIF is the Kenyan statutory health insurance deduction administered by the SHA, which replaced NHIF from October 2024. The rate is 2.75% of gross pay (minimum KES 300).

A real Kenyan example

Gross KES 60,000 → SHIF KES 1,650/month.

Formula

SHIF = max(KES 300, Gross × 2.75%)

Why it matters

SHIF is mandatory and replaced the NHIF tiered table. Most employers needed payroll system updates.
