KRA eTIMS and ETR

Do I need an ETR machine if I have a POS?

Updated July 2026

Short answer

Not if the POS files eTIMS. KRA compliance now runs through eTIMS, and a POS with eTIMS built in transmits a compliant invoice for every sale directly to KRA, which is the job the old ETR machine used to do. A POS without eTIMS support leaves the compliance gap open, so the answer depends entirely on the POS.

More detail

Ask one question of any POS: does every sale produce a KRA-compliant eTIMS invoice automatically, including sales made offline? If yes, a separate ETR device adds nothing. If no, you are either filing manually or carrying a second system, and both leak time and risk.

Veira files eTIMS natively: each receipt is a compliant invoice with the QR code and CU details, queued offline sales transmit when the connection returns, and the records KRA expects accumulate automatically. One device at the counter covers the till, payments and the tax trail.

How do I know if my POS is eTIMS-compliant?
Check a live receipt: a compliant eTIMS invoice carries KRA details including a QR code and control unit information, and the sale should appear in your eTIMS records. If receipts are plain paper with no KRA trail, the POS is not filing.
What if my current POS does not support eTIMS?
You can bolt on a separate eTIMS solution and reconcile the two, or switch to a POS that files natively. Most businesses switch, because running two systems doubles the daily work the POS was meant to remove.
Does an offline sale still get an eTIMS invoice?
On Veira, yes. The sale is invoiced locally and transmitted to KRA when the connection returns, so a network drop does not create a compliance gap.
