KRA monthly filing deadlines, in plain terms

Most monthly obligations in Kenya are due by the 20th of the following month: VAT, Turnover Tax, monthly rental income tax and withholding tax. PAYE, together with SHIF, NSSF and the Housing Levy, is due earlier, by the 9th of the following month.

Filing late is two separate problems: a penalty for late filing and interest on any tax paid late. The fix is simple, file before the date even if cash is tight, because a nil or estimated return avoids the late-filing penalty.

Worked examples

VAT for June
  • June VAT is due by 20 July.
  • File and pay on or before the 20th to stay clean.

Frequently asked questions

When is VAT due in Kenya?
VAT is due by the 20th of the following month. June VAT, for example, is due by 20 July. File and pay by that date to avoid a late-filing penalty and interest.
When is PAYE due?
PAYE, along with SHIF, NSSF and the Housing Levy, is due by the 9th of the following month. It falls earlier than the 20th deadline that applies to VAT and turnover tax.
What happens if I file late?
You face a late-filing penalty plus interest on any tax paid late. Filing on time, even a nil return when you had no activity, avoids the penalty.
Is turnover tax monthly?
Yes. Turnover Tax is filed and paid monthly, due by the 20th of the following month, for businesses that fall under the turnover tax regime.
Does Veira help me file on time?
Veira records every sale as a compliant eTIMS invoice as you trade, so your figures are ready when a return is due, instead of being reconstructed at the deadline.
