Sacco Dividend Calculator (Kenya)

This Sacco dividend calculator works out both distributions a Kenyan Sacco makes: the dividend paid on your share capital and the interest or rebate paid on your deposits. They apply to different balances at different rates, which is why a single advertised percentage never describes what your money actually earned. Both rates are declared at the annual general meeting out of the year's surplus, so enter the ones your Sacco declared.

This is the number that gets misread. The headline dividend of 12.0% applies only to share capital, which is usually the smaller balance. Across everything you hold with the Sacco the actual return is 8.67%. Neither rate is promised: both are declared at the AGM out of the surplus the Sacco made that year, so last year's figures are not a forecast. Tax treatment of distributions is a matter for KRA or a qualified adviser and is not modelled here.

Two distributions, two balances

A Sacco dividend is paid on share capital, which is your ownership stake in the co-operative and is generally not withdrawable while you remain a member. Interest or a rebate is paid on member deposits, which is the balance that accumulates with your contributions and that your borrowing is measured against.

They are declared separately at the annual general meeting, usually at different rates, and they are not interchangeable. This is the single most common misunderstanding about Sacco returns.

Why the headline percentage overstates the return

Members compare Saccos on the dividend, because that is the figure that gets announced. But share capital is typically much smaller than deposits, so a high dividend on a small balance can produce less than a modest rebate on a large one.

The calculator shows both amounts in shillings and the blended return across everything you hold, which is the comparable number. When somebody tells you their Sacco paid a given percentage, ask which balance it applied to.

What a declared rate is and is not

Both rates are decisions of the annual general meeting, made out of the surplus the society actually generated. A Sacco that has had a strong year can declare generously; one that has not may declare little or nothing. A figure paid in one year is not a commitment about the next.

A board proposing to retain more surplus and distribute less is often strengthening the institution rather than failing the members, since retained surplus is how institutional capital is built. That is a legitimate governance trade-off and it is argued at the AGM.

Worked examples

KES 60,000 shares at 12%, KES 300,000 deposits at 8%
  • Dividend KES 7,200
  • Rebate KES 24,000
  • Total KES 31,200 on KES 360,000 held, an actual return of 8.67%
  • Not the 12% the headline dividend suggests
Why the comparison matters
  • A Sacco declaring 15% on share capital and 5% on deposits
  • pays less to a member who is mostly in deposits than one declaring 10% and 9%
  • Compare the shillings, not the headline

Frequently asked questions

How is a Sacco dividend calculated?
A dividend is applied to your share capital at the rate declared at the annual general meeting. Interest or a rebate is applied separately to your member deposits at its own declared rate. They are two different distributions on two different balances.
What is the difference between a Sacco dividend and a rebate?
The dividend is paid on share capital and reflects ownership in the co-operative. The rebate, often called interest on deposits, is paid on your accumulated contributions and reflects saving. A Sacco may pay both, usually at different rates.
Why is my payout lower than the advertised dividend rate?
Because the advertised rate applies to share capital, which is usually the smaller of your two balances. The return across everything you hold with the Sacco is a blend of the two rates weighted by the two balances, and it is almost always lower than the headline.
Are Sacco dividends guaranteed?
No. Both distributions are declared at the annual general meeting out of the surplus the society actually made that year. A figure paid in one year is not a promise about the next.
When are Sacco dividends paid?
Typically after the annual general meeting that declares them, on a timetable each Sacco sets for itself. Ask your Sacco for its own schedule.
Is a Sacco dividend taxed?
Tax treatment of co-operative distributions is set by Kenyan tax law and is a matter for current KRA guidance. This calculator does not model tax. Confirm the position that applies to you with KRA or a qualified adviser.
Should I put more into share capital to get a bigger dividend?
Only after checking two things: whether share capital counts towards your borrowing multiplier at your Sacco, and that share capital is generally not withdrawable while you remain a member. A larger dividend on money you cannot reach and cannot borrow against is a poor trade.
