What is NHIF?

NHIF (National Health Insurance Fund) is a mandatory health insurance scheme for all employees in Kenya. Monthly contributions are deducted from your salary and provide health insurance coverage.

NHIF covers hospital bills, outpatient visits, and medical emergencies. It's separate from private health insurance and is a government requirement.

NHIF Contribution Rates

NHIF uses a tiered system based on gross salary. Higher earners pay more, but the percentage decreases. For example, someone earning KES 5,000 pays KES 150 (3%), while someone earning KES 100,000 pays KES 1,600 (1.6%).

These rates are set by NHIF annually. Changes are communicated to employers. Always verify current rates with your payroll system or contact NHIF.

Worked examples

Entry-level employee
  • Gross salary: KES 30,000
  • NHIF band: KES 30,000–34,999 → KES 800
  • Net salary: KES 30,000 - KES 800 = KES 29,200
Mid-level professional
  • Gross salary: KES 80,000
  • NHIF band: KES 80,000–89,999 → KES 1,500
  • Net salary: KES 80,000 - KES 1,500 = KES 78,500

Frequently asked questions

Is NHIF mandatory?
Yes. All employed persons must contribute to NHIF. Self-employed persons can opt in. There's no exemption.
How is NHIF different from NSSF and SHIF?
NHIF = health insurance. NSSF = retirement benefits. SHIF = hospital insurance (newer, complementary to NHIF). All three are separate mandatory deductions.
Can employers choose not to deduct NHIF?
No. It's mandatory. Employers who don't deduct face penalties and employee complaints to NHIF. Veira enforces NHIF deductions automatically.
What if I don't use my NHIF coverage?
Your contribution is not refunded, but it remains available for emergencies and future use. Many employees use NHIF for outpatient care and hospital stays.
How do I claim benefits from NHIF?
Register with NHIF at a public hospital or accredited facility. Present your NHIF card for consultation and treatment. NHIF covers inpatient and outpatient costs.
