What is Supervisory Committee?
The supervisory committee is a body elected by the members of a co-operative society to oversee its affairs independently of the board: reviewing internal controls, examining the society's books and records, and reporting to members at the annual general meeting. Its composition and functions are set out in co-operative law and in the society's bylaws.
A real Kenyan example
A supervisory committee reviewing a system migration asks whether every member balance in the new system traces to a balance in the old one, and reports what it found to the AGM.
Why it matters
The supervisory committee is the members' own check on the people running the SACCO, and it is the governance body most often treated as ceremonial. Where it functions properly it is the earliest warning members get that something is wrong.
