The order in which a Sacco recovers
The precise process is set out in the loan agreement, the guarantee form and the Sacco's bylaws, and it differs between Saccos, so read yours rather than relying on a general description. The shape, though, is consistent: arrears accumulate, penalty charges apply, the loan is classified according to how far behind it is, and recovery moves through your own deposits before reaching the guarantors who committed theirs.
Classification matters beyond the label. For a regulated Sacco, loans are classified by how overdue they are and provisions are made against them, which is a cost borne by the membership collectively. That is the mechanism behind the sector-wide interest in default: unrecovered lending is member money, so one member's default is quietly paid for by the others.
The reporting position is separate again. Reporting to credit reference bureaus in Kenya is governed by law and by the applicable regulations, and what gets reported and when is set by those rather than by the Sacco's preference. Ask what will be reported before agreeing any arrangement, because members frequently discover this at the point of applying for credit elsewhere.

Sign UpWhat to do, in the order that preserves options
Almost every useful option exists before arrears build and closes afterwards.
- 1
Talk to the Sacco before you miss a payment
This is the whole of the advice. A member who says in advance that next month will be difficult is a member with options. A member who goes quiet for three months is a recovery case, and the Sacco's discretion narrows as classification progresses.
- 2
Ask what arrangements exist
Rescheduling changes the timing of payments, restructuring changes the terms, and both are usually available on request and rarely offered unprompted. Ask what each would mean for the total repayable and for what is reported.
- 3
Tell your guarantors
They have committed their own deposits and their own borrowing capacity to your loan. They will find out, and finding out from the Sacco rather than from you is how these situations become permanent between people.
- 4
Establish the penalty position
Penalty interest is what turns a cash-flow problem into a debt problem. Find out the structure and, if an arrangement is agreed, whether penalties are suspended under it.
- 5
Check what is being reported, and when
Ask specifically. Reporting is governed by law and the applicable regulations rather than by preference, and the answer affects your ability to borrow anywhere for a considerable time.
- 6
Use the dispute process if you disagree
Where you believe a balance or a charge is wrong, the society's bylaws set out a dispute procedure. Use it in writing and keep the correspondence, rather than simply withholding payment, which converts a dispute into a default.
How a difficult month becomes a default
Going quiet
Silence is read as inability to pay and moves the file towards recovery. It is also the one thing that removes every discretionary option the Sacco had.
Withholding payment during a dispute
A disputed charge does not suspend the obligation. Raise the dispute in writing through the bylaws process and keep paying what is not disputed, or the dispute becomes a default with its own consequences.
Taking a top-up to cover the instalment
Borrowing more to service existing borrowing resets the term, raises the total interest and leaves the underlying affordability problem untouched. It buys a month and costs considerably more than a month.
Not telling the guarantors
They are financially exposed and they will find out. Members who learn from the Sacco that their deposits have been committed to somebody else's arrears rarely guarantee anyone again, which has a cost beyond the loan.
Assuming employment protects you
Where collection is by check-off, leaving employment stops the deduction but not the obligation. Establish before you borrow what happens if the salary link ends, because it is one of the commonest routes into arrears.
Why guarantors are the part people underestimate
Consider three colleagues who guaranteed a fourth. Each committed a portion of their own deposits, and each accepted a reduction in their own borrowing capacity for the life of the loan. None of them borrowed anything, and all three agreed because it was a small favour among people who see each other daily.
When the borrower falls into arrears, the Sacco works through the borrower's own deposits first and then looks to the guarantees. At that point the three colleagues discover, often at the same moment, that their deposits are exposed and that their own plans for borrowing have moved out of reach. The financial consequence is recoverable. The consequence for the working relationship usually is not.
This runs in both directions and both are worth stating plainly. If you are asking someone to guarantee you, you are asking for their savings and their borrowing capacity, not for a signature, and you owe them the real numbers and an early warning if anything changes. If you are being asked, read the guarantee form, ask what portion of your deposits is committed and for how long, and ask what it does to your own capacity.
The practical conclusion is not that guaranteeing is unwise. It is the mechanism that lets Saccos lend without physical collateral, and it works because most borrowers repay. It is that the obligation is real, and the cheapest moment to understand it is before signing.
Lenders decline businesses that cannot show consistent, verifiable sales, which keeps working capital just out of reach exactly when you need it.
Veira builds a clean, timestamped sales history you can show a lender, so your books support the application instead of sinking it.
Where Veira fits, and where it does not
Veira is a point-of-sale and business operating system. It is not a lender, a debt adviser or a Sacco, it has no role in recovery, and nothing on this page is legal or financial advice. The loan agreement, the guarantee form and the Sacco's bylaws govern what actually happens, and where circumstances are serious a qualified adviser is the right call.
The one honest connection is preventive and sits before any of this. Business borrowers default disproportionately because the loan was sized against deposits while the repayment had to come from trading income nobody had measured. A business running on Veira knows what it actually earns month to month, which is the information that makes the difference between borrowing an affordable amount and discovering afterwards that it was not.

The single most useful thing in this page is the timing. Talk to the Sacco before you miss a payment, when rescheduling and restructuring are still available and the file has not moved towards recovery. Tell your guarantors early, because their deposits and their borrowing capacity are committed to your loan. And read the guarantee form before you sign one for somebody else.
